What you want is a VPN, plain and simple.

You can accomplish similar things with SSH tunneling, or even plain old
ssh and scp depending on your needs, possibly VNC,  you could use
ftp...but the simplest, most obvious, and most secure method is a VPN.
They are meant to be used for exactly your kind of situation.
